It is well known among those who own Siberian Huskies that they have a habit of scratching objects with their claws, such as tree trunks or wooden furniture. They also scratch on the ground sometimes. When Siberian Huskies scratch an object, they have a habit of always secretion a sticky and smelly liquid. They apply this liquid to the surface of the object they are scratching, and the smell of the liquid attracts the Siberian Husky to return to the same spot to scratch again.
For domestic Siberian Huskies, if proper training is not given, they may damage furniture and floors. Before training, prepare a wooden post that is about 70 cm long and 20 cm in diameter, and secure it upright near the Siberian Huskies’ den. This will allow the Siberian Huskies to scratch on it. The wood used for the post should be sturdy.
Train your Siberian Husky by taking it to a wooden post and holding its front legs with both hands, placing its front paws on the post to simulate the digging motion. This will allow the glandular secretions from its paws to be deposited on the post. With repeated training and the lure of the scent, your Siberian Husky will learn to go to the post to dig, and once it has formed the habit, it will no longer dig on furniture.
For Siberian Huskies that have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, you should first cover the furniture with plastic boards, wood boards, etc. before placing a solid wooden post or board in front of the furniture at an appropriate position. Then, train the Siberian Husky to scratch on the wooden post or board using the same method. Once the Siberian Husky has formed the habit of scratching on the wooden post or board, slowly move it to the location you deem appropriate. Do not move it too far each time, as a distance of 5-10 cm is suitable. Do not rush the process.
